Scholarships:
Dear Members:
Each year, if financially able, Broward County Council of Teachers of Mathematics will award up to five, $500 scholarships to high school graduating seniors whose parents are current BCCTM members. Our standard for consideration is admission to any accredited college or university within the United States.
The BCCTM Scholarship was named “The Mary Ann Christina Scholarship” in March 2011 to recognize the contributions of Mary Ann Christina to the field of mathematics education in Broward County.
For the last five years of her life, Mary Ann Christina taught all levels of mathematics from Algebra 1 through AP Calculus and AP Statistics at Atlantic Technical Center Magnet High School in Broward County,Florida. She also spent time as the Mathematics Department chairperson at Coral Springs High School and Deerfield Beach High Schools as well as the GEM coordinator of Advanced Academics in Broward County, Florida. She was very involved in the Florida Opening the Gate philosophy—"Algebra for All"—and had spoken at Florida Council of Mathematics Teachers' conferences. She authored the book Building A Teen Center for teachers to use in their classrooms so that students could understand the real life meaning of mathematics.
Mary Ann Christina was the Deerfield Beach High School Teacher of the Year in 1990, and in 1992 she was named the Broward County High School Teacher of the Year. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award in Secondary Mathematics for the State of Florida in 1996. Until her death in December of 2006, MaryAnn Christina devoted her life to promoting mathematics education in Broward County.
